The Scanning Process
You can build your own structured-light 3D scanner using the FlexScan3D Development Kit. A structured-light 3D scanner uses projected light patterns and a camera system for measuring three-dimensional shape of an object. Compared to laser 3D scanners, our 3D scanners offer the following advantages:
- Faster scan times
- Produce dense and accurate data
- Full field scanning
- Safe for people, even to the naked eye
- Include basic scan cleanup and data editing capabilities
To get a better understanding of how the 3D scanner works, here is an overview of the 3D scanning process:

A white light projector directs a series of reference patterns onto the subject. The light deflects onto the object’s surface. This process help to calculate the object’s depth and surface information. The data is captured using a two machine vision cameras.

FlexScan3D’s triangulation engine processes the images from the cameras to acquire the data needed to create a 3D model. Automated 3D capture drastically reduces the time and cost in capturing complex physical measurements.
