Hardware recommendations?

Postby vacipeter » Tue Mar 09, 2010 4:27 pm

Hi,
I am testing Flexscan on my desctop PC. I'm planning on buying a laptop for my scanner setup, and I was wondering if you could help me with some advice.
I'm using a split scanner with two uEye cameras.
I need to be able to make 8 (if that is too much to ask, at least 4-5) scans in a very short time (about 2 minutes). What hardware do you recommend? (I have read the recommendations in the manual, but I feel I might need a stronger machine). Of course, I'm trying to go for a reasonable price/value ratio.

So, is there a point in buying eg. core2 quad, does it make a difference, or should dual core or simple core2 be enough?
Would a very good video card improve the scanning and processing speed, or is the CPU doing most of the job?
Should I go for like 8GBs of DDR3 RAM (and a 64 bit system), or is 3GB enough?
Does getting shorter and better cables make any difference (smaller resistivity)?
Windows 7 or XP? 32 or 64 bit?
What is the weak link usually? Also, do you know a good test program or method to see if a computer will be good enough (apart from installing Flexscan and trying it :) )?

Oh, and I'm also going to use Leios to edit the scanned images, so the laptop should be able to handle that too.
Thank you!

Hi Peter,

Here is our laptop recommendation:

Processor: we would recommend at least a core 2 duo, this will speed up your overall scanning and processing of the scans
Memory: 4GB recommended
Graphics Card: at minimum you should have a dedicated graphics card. This will be evident when you are viewing your scans.onboard graphics card will not work with our software
OS: you can use either xp or win 7, however if you are using win 7 you will need more memory than if you were using win xp
USB: Please make sure your laptop have at least 3 usb port. The better the usb ports the faster it will transfer the pictures from the cameras to the computer.
